Restores My Folding Ladder's Safety Lock

My folding ladder is essential for reaching those higher spots around the house and yard. However, one of the locking pins in the middle section, the one you pull out to unfold and adjust the ladder's height, had become incredibly stiff. I suspected it was due to being left on a low point outside, exposed to the rain for an extended period. Even after bringing it into the shed to dry, the pin was stubbornly stuck. I couldn't pull it out to safely adjust the ladder, which made me hesitant to use it at all. My safety definitely comes first.
Knowing WD-40's ability to tackle rust and free up seized mechanisms, I decided to give the locking pin a good soaking. I directed the spray nozzle right at the pin itself and also into the opening where it slides in and out. I wanted to make sure the lubricant penetrated any rust or corrosion that might be causing the stiffness.
I let it sit for a few moments and then tried to pull the pin. It was still a bit stiff, but I could feel a slight movement. I applied a little more WD-40 and gently wiggled the pin back and forth. Gradually, it started to loosen. With a little more effort, the pin slid out smoothly! I worked it in and out several times, and now it moves freely and locks securely into place. That simple application of WD-40 has restored the safety and functionality of my folding ladder, giving me the confidence to use it again without worry.
Step-by-Step Guide: Freeing a Stiff Folding Ladder Locking Pin with WD-40
Here's how I used WD-40 to get the locking pin on my folding ladder working like new again:
Step 1: Identify the Stiff Locking Pin
Locate the locking pin on the middle section of your folding ladder that is stiff and difficult to pull out for adjustment.
Step 2: Gather Your WD-40
Ensure you have your can of WD-40 Multi-Use Product ready.
Step 3: Apply WD-40 to the Pin and Opening
Aim the WD-40 nozzle directly at the locking pin itself, applying a generous amount.
Also, spray WD-40 into the opening where the pin slides in and out of the ladder frame.
Step 4: Allow Penetration (Short Wait)
Let the WD-40 sit for a few moments to allow it to penetrate any rust or corrosion.
Step 5: Gently Wiggle and Try to Pull the Pin
Gently try to wiggle the locking pin back and forth and attempt to pull it out. Avoid forcing it.
Step 6: Repeat Application and Movement
If the pin is still stiff, apply another spray of WD-40 and continue gently wiggling and trying to pull it.
Step 7: Work the Pin In and Out
Once the pin starts to move, work it in and out several times to help the WD-40 fully lubricate the mechanism.
Step 8: Check for Smooth and Secure Locking
Ensure the pin now slides in and out smoothly and locks securely into place, making the ladder safe to use.
Now you can use your folding ladder with confidence again!
