Old Jeep Gets a New Exhaust!

Hi there! I've been restoring my 1990 Jeep YJ for the past 3 years. The exhaust has been crumbling to pieces so I replaced it myself with a stainless steel system from the manifold back. I used WD-40 to loosen up rusty bolts and to lubricate metal fittings for a better slide-in.

This Jeep is my baby; fixing it up has been a journey. I believe in keeping old trucks and cars on the road instead of sending them to landfills. Mechanical skills are so important for everyone to have, especially in this day and age where repairing instead of replacing helps protect our environment by reducing waste. I'm proud to share my knowledge to hopefully inspire others to take part in their automotive maintenance!

WD-40 is there for me in all of my projects as a tool to make my life easier. Working on a 35-year-old truck is not always smooth sailing, but it's always rewarding!

Enjoy my video!

Step 1: Loosen up old bolts.

Spray WD-40 Penetrant on any rusty or tough-to-remove bolts. For an even better effect, spray the night before to let it soak in fully, and spray again just before unscrewing.

Step 2: Remove the old exhaust.

Lefty-loosey the bolts holding the exhaust to the manifold. I also had to use a grinder to cut parts of the exhaust in order to be able to remove it.

Step 3: Install the new exhaust.

Plus 2 more

This step will have multiple parts depending on how your exhaust is supposed to be built and how it is mounted to the vehicle. These are my steps:
A. Attach the manifold pipe to the manifold using the bolts, being careful not to overtighten.
B. Use high temperature silicone to form a gasket between the manifold pipe and the catalytic converter. Secure with bolts.
C. Now we're ready to attach the muffler and tail pipe. These pieces are pipe-clamp pieces, meaning you slide one pipe into the other and use a clamp to mate the pieces. Use WD-40 here to lubricate the pieces before inserting.
D. Mount the exhaust to the car at the rubber mounting points then tighten down all the clamps, repositioning as needed.

Step 4: Start your engine!

You're now ready to rumble. Start the engine! Listen for any rattles or sounds that could suggest something out of place. Make any changes as needed. And enjoy the new sound!
