The Project:
I repaired my grandmother's historic trunk, which had been in a wet, damp basement for decades. The basement always seemed to have a mysterious drip coming from somewhere, and the trunk had suffered as a result. The trunk's intricate metal hardware was corroded and seized, but I was determined to bring it back to life.
The Repair:
I carefully examined the trunk, identifying areas of corrosion and damage. I then sprayed WD-40 onto the corroded metal parts, allowing the penetrating oil to loosen the seized hinges and latch. After several hours, I carefully worked the hinges and latch, gradually freeing them from their stuck positions. For delicate, small areas, I used the WD-40 Precision Pen to target the corrosion with precision. For one particularly stubborn area, I used a soft-bristled toothbrush to gently sweep away corrosion and crud, taking care not to scratch the metal.
The Outcome:
With the trunk now repaired, I was able to open it and reveal a treasure trove of memories. Inside, I found retro clothing, old baby clothes, a soft knit blanket, antique accessories, an old doll, handwritten letters, magazines from 1966, land maps, a family Bible, and even old coins that I don't recognize - some of which look like they could have been salvaged from a shipwreck. I'm not sure what they're worth or where they came from, but they're a fascinating mystery. No one ever thought to open it or restore it - it was always just there, silently holding secrets and stories.
Opening the trunk gave me a brief, precious look into my grandmother's past, and I'm grateful for the stories it will help keep alive. Like the coins found inside, we'll let time tell their story. WD-40 helped bring this piece of history back to life, and I'm grateful for its help in uncovering these treasures.
